Kate Brookman and Will Stone, both from Keith, South Australia, having finished their Uni courses, left Adelaide on 15th December 2008 for Uganda. Kate & Will are staying in Joseph's village for the next 5 weeks after which they will travel to Niarobi to start on an African Overland Safari tour ending in Cape Town, South Africa.

Soon After Arrival
We arrived without a hassle, hope the return flights go just as smoothly. We were both so excited to see our bags arrive when we got to Entebbe. Could not believe the warm welcome we received when we arrived at the airport. Charles, Michael and Michael greeted us with the biggest sign, cheer, smiles and hugs. Kampala was interesting, the roads to houses were not made for cars, big ditches and little space. Glad I was not driving. The driving is definitely by negotiation and very quick.
The hotel we stayed in Kampala was of a good standard. The shower had no pressure or hot water so there was a tap halfway down the wall with a little bit more pressure so we would just squat under there. It was the best shower!! The cold water was very refreshing and the novelty of squatting was rather fun. Since being in the village we have not yet set up the shower we have brought as we really enjoy bathing in the bucket they provide. It is the most relaxing thing standing under the sky and splashing the water on you. Although nearly got into trouble when needing to wash my hair as too hard to splash the water over your head so I thought I would stick my head in the bucked instead – almost did a summersault into the tree!! Will figure out a better way to do it soon. Maybe I will find an extra bucket.
Can not believe how welcoming everybody is. They all tell us this is our home too and call us aunty and uncle to the children. The kids are so cute!! One mother happily let me wake her 3 month old so I could hold him. Getting to know the children well and their different personalities. They all love the car, such a novelty with the music playing. They are also very energetic so Will and I have been playing a lot of footy and soccer.
Went to the market today, it was massive. So many people, got stared at a lot. Tried the local brew.
Love the food here. Will and I are hoping to learn how they cook it whilst we stay here. Jacinta the head mistress is not here until Sunday so we have Helen her niece looking after us. We have tried to help with food or washing but she will not let us do any of it. She says we can after 2 weeks when we are not longer visitors! Every body is very hygienically aware, wash hands before and after eating every time.
There has been much laughter in understanding different ways of life and trying to pronounce their language. It is such a peaceful place without electricity and vehicles.
Dogs and roosters do not allow for much sleep at night so will probably be using my ear plugs tonight.
Had a tour of the school, basic but good. Have not yet seen the hospital. Delgrascious who is Jacinta’s daughter is home also and will be working at the hospital on an attachment for uni and Helen also works there as a nurse on attachment.
Must go as it is pitch black and I’m outside sitting on a stool so small my bum is hanging over and getting very sore and I am attracting all the bugs big and small because this is the only light you can see. Kate & Will.
